Cascadia Research conducted its first surveys for North Pacific humpback whales in Nicaragua in 2004.  We found plenty of whales and a unique locale from which to base our operations in a new marina under construction on the remote northwest coast of the country.  In 2006 we sponsored our first participatory research trip to Nicaragua, in which people joined us in our work to learn about research techniques and experience whales in this quiet, beautiful part of the world. These trips have become a popular aspect of our work, enjoyed by researchers and participants alike, and we have conducted one or two trips in most years since.   This work is funded entirely by this participatory program, so we truly can't do it without our volunteers.

2010 TRIP CANCELLED DUE TO INSUFFICIENT PARTICIPATION, SORRY!

If you are interested in joining us in the future, please contact Erin Falcone (efalcone (at) cascadiaresearch.org).  Click here for trip detailsFor more information about where we stay during these trips please visit the Marina Puesta del Sol web site.

We also conduct participatory research trips on humpback whales in Costa Rica with the Oceanic Society and ElderhostelLink to 2008 trip report from Costa Rica.
